Each year I gather the grandchildren together to decorate the Christmas tree — that’s the easy part.
The hard part is teaching the grandchildren the true meaning of Christmas, especially when the details can be summoned up with one quick phrase.
So after reading the bible story, I ask the grandchildren a few short questions. It went something like this:
“Why do we celebrate Christmas?” I asked.
“It’s Jesus’ birthday,” the children chorused.
“Why did the wise men seek Jesus?”
“It’s Jesus’ birthday,” the children replied.
“Did the angels tell the shepherds about the baby Jesus?”
“Yes!” they joyfully cried.
“Why?” I prodded.
“It’s Jesus’ birthday!” they chimed.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
